Are you a do-it-yourself or a done-for-you kind of business owner?

Which do you prefer when marketing your business?

I recently polled my LinkedIn audience by asking, “When marketing your business, which do you prefer: Done-for-you or Do-it-yourself?” And the results… were split down the middle, 50/50.

In my first year of business, I had two offers – a ‘done-for-you’ marketing service and a coaching service.

The difference? Just as you imagined, one option gives you all the time back in your business because your marketing is done for you.

And the other offered a great learning experience for those who wanted to learn the essentials but then had plans to take things over and manage their own marketing.

Here’s an opportunity and a challenge with each option:

Done-For-You:

Done for you, which in my experience was perfect for realtors and medical professionals, can remove your beautiful face too far from your audience.

In today’s world, people crave connection more than ever before, so showing your face on camera is key. Especially on video, which we know is most engaging.

This can be tricky to replicate on a done-for-you service. Not impossible. I’ve done it. Just more challenging and time-consuming for both parties – me and the client.

The Benefit?

This service is ideal for the busy business owner who is focused on operations and growth.

They’re able to put precious energy into revenue-generating activities (like outreach and client relations) because they’re not worried about their next Instagram post or email campaign. It’s getting done by me, a marketing expert with 15 years of career experience.

They have peace of mind because their business is getting the attention it deserves. And to be frank (and maybe a little contradictory), not every business requires you to show up on video as I mentioned above.

There are plenty of effective workaround tricks that put you at the forefront. Like high-quality photos and graphics.

Do-It-Yourself

The coaching offer requires your attention and time because the whole idea is for you to learn and implement yourself. It can feel intimidating at first for anyone without any marketing experience, and there’s always a learning curve.

Plus, the responsibility of getting it done is placed on you, which can feel demanding since you’re also running a business.

The benefit is having someone SHOW you exactly what to do. Step-by-step in clearly defined actions. It teaches you a transferable skill and gives you control.

It also enables you to have a front seat to all the inner workings which are super helpful for when you’re ready to hire your marketing. You know how things work, so you’ll know if someone is doing a good job marketing your business.

So, which do you prefer and why?
